Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote

Jorge Luis Borges · 1939 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Modernist

A corrective obituary lists the visible work of a minor French symbolist — sonnets, a monograph on chess — then turns to the work nobody has seen: not a copy of Don Quixote but a Quixote composed afresh, arriving word for word at the same sentences. The narrator quotes one passage twice, identical on the page, and explains why the second is infinitely richer. Borges's founding joke about authorship.
