The Library of Babel

Jorge Luis Borges · 1941 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Modernist

An aged librarian sets down the plan of his universe: an indefinite series of hexagonal galleries, each with four walls of shelves, a spiral staircase and a lamp. The shelves hold every book the twenty-five orthographic symbols can produce, so almost all are gibberish, and generations have crossed the galleries hunting the volume that would justify their lives. The century's standing image of total information.
