The Age of Anxiety

W. H. Auden · 1947 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

Four strangers fall into conversation in a Third Avenue bar in wartime New York: a shipping clerk, a Canadian airman, a department-store buyer and a widowed medical officer, working through the seven ages of man and then a journey they take together in the mind. They move on to an apartment for a wake that turns into something like a betrothal. Cast in a revived Anglo-Saxon measure, it took the Pulitzer and named the postwar mood.
