The Ambassadors

Henry James · 1903 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Lambert Strether, fifty-five and dependent on the Massachusetts widow he expects to marry, is sent to Paris to fetch back her son from a woman she assumes is disgraceful. He finds Chad improved past recognition and the city an argument he had never heard put, and takes to telling a young man to live all he can, while further ambassadors are sent to deal with him. James thought it the best thing he had done, and criticism has largely agreed.
