The Bostonians

Henry James · 1886 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

Olive Chancellor, a wealthy Boston reformer who cannot speak in public, finds her instrument in Verena Tarrant, a girl who can hold a hall spellbound on the wrongs of women, and takes her in to train her. Basil Ransom, Olive's Mississippi cousin and her opposite in everything, hears Verena speak once and sets out to marry her and stop her. James's only novel of American public life, and his most direct engagement with Hawthorne's reformers.
