Staring at the Sun
In 1941 a fighter pilot climbing away from a dawn sortie watches the sun come up a second time, and tells it to the young woman billeted in the house where he is stationed, who keeps it for the rest of a very long life. She marries badly and leaves, raises a son alone, flies out to see the Grand Canyon at sixty, and returns always to the same three questions about God and dying. The last section carries her into the twenty-first century and a state computer that will answer anything except those.
