A History of the World in 10½ Chapters

Julian Barnes · 1989 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

The opening chapter is narrated by a woodworm that got aboard the ark uninvited and has a great deal to say about the selection criteria, the catering and the captain's temper. Nine more follow — a hijacked cruise liner, a medieval trial of insects, a shipwreck survivor painted into a masterpiece, a woman sailing north out of a poisoned world — interrupted by a half-chapter on love. The flood and the question of who gets a place aboard recur in every one, which is what holds the book together.
