Talking It Over
Three people take turns speaking straight out to the reader about the same handful of events: a dull and decent banker, his verbally incontinent oldest friend, and the picture restorer one of them marries. Every correction of the record is also a bid for the reader's sympathy, and the facts shift according to who last had the floor. Barnes builds the whole triangle out of testimony, with no narrator anywhere to arbitrate between them.
