Four European critics chasing a reclusive German novelist, Benno von Archimboldi, follow his trail to the Mexican border city of Santa Teresa. Five loosely hinged books gather there: a Chilean professor losing his footing, an American sports reporter sent to cover a fight, a coroner's catalogue of hundreds of murdered women, and at last the novelist's own life from the Eastern Front onward. The twentieth century's violence taken as a single subject, left unfinished at the author's death.
