Prosas Profanas

Rubén Darío · 1896 CE · Poem · Latin American · Victorian

Marquises out of Watteau, Greek fauns, a princess in Japanese lacquer, and above all the swan, whose curved neck is asked over and over what the future holds. A preface refuses to write for the crowd and declares that the grandfather of every Spanish American is a conquistador, and the verse behind it works a metrical range Castilian had not attempted. Spanish American modernismo at its most decorative, and the volume most in debt to Verlaine, whom Darío called father and magical master.
