A girl in a mountain town where her family keeps a shrine and braids its cords wakes some mornings in the body of a boy in Tokyo, and he in hers, the two of them leaving notes on each other's phones to manage lives neither can steer. A comet is due to pass closer to the earth than it has in a thousand years. On release it became the highest-grossing Japanese animated film worldwide, displacing Spirited Away and making Shinkai the first director since Miyazaki to reach that scale.
