Suzume
A seventeen-year-old on Kyushu meets a traveller hunting for a door in the flooded ruins of an abandoned resort town, follows him there, and pulls loose the stone that had been holding it shut. Doors like it stand in derelict places all over the country, and what pushes through them registers to everyone else as an earthquake. Shinkai's third disaster film takes the 2011 Tohoku tsunami as its subject directly, its road route north tracing the country's depopulated ruins.
