The Little Mermaid

Hans Christian Andersen · c. 1837 CE · Folktale · Nordic · Romantic

The youngest of six sisters is allowed at fifteen to rise to the surface for the first time, and sees a prince on a ship the night a storm breaks it apart. She carries him to shore, cannot forget him, and goes to the sea witch to trade what she has for legs and for the immortal soul that mermaids are not born with. Andersen turned a mermaid-bride tale into an argument about what a soul costs.
