The Tale of Sim Cheong
A blind man's wife dies within days of the birth, and he carries the baby round the village begging milk until the girl is old enough to beg for him instead. A monk tells him three hundred sacks of rice pledged to the temple will restore his sight and he promises what he does not have; his daughter hears of the debt and sells herself to merchant sailors who need a girl to give the sea at the Indangsu crossing. Filial duty pressed until it consumes the child, and still the most often performed of the pansori.
