The Nightingale

Hans Christian Andersen · c. 1843 CE · Folktale · Nordic · Romantic

Travellers write that the finest thing in the Chinese emperor's realm is not his porcelain palace but a plain grey bird singing in the wood beyond the garden. She is found and brought to court, where she sings until an ambassador's gift arrives: a jewelled clockwork nightingale that never tires and never varies. Written the year Andersen met the singer Jenny Lind, and the sharpest thing he wrote about what art is for.
