Éloa
An angel is born out of the tear Christ sheds at the tomb of Lazarus, and grows up in heaven hearing of one exile whom nobody there will name. Pity sends her out to look for him, and in the dark she finds a beautiful mourner who tells her he was condemned for loving too much and asks nothing of her but to be consoled. Subtitled the sister of the angels, it is the central French treatment of the Romantic fallen angel and the first of the long poems on which Vigny's standing rests.
