Layla and Majnun

Nizami Ganjavi · c. 1188 CE · Poem · Persian · Medieval

Qays, a young Bedouin poet, falls for Layla at school and makes verses about her openly enough that her family refuses the match and marries her elsewhere. He goes out into the desert, half naked among the animals, saying her name until the tribes call him Majnun, the possessed. Devotion perfected only in loss; the Persian love story that fed Sufi poetry for centuries.
