The Demon

Mikhail Lermontov · 1841 CE · Poem · Russian · Romantic

An exiled spirit who has been circling the Caucasus since his fall sees from the air a Georgian prince's daughter dancing on a rooftop before her wedding, and arranges for the bridegroom not to arrive. He comes to her in the convent she has fled to, offering the world and asking in return only to be allowed to love. Lermontov worked at it for a decade and never got it past the censor; it circulated in manuscript and became the most copied Russian poem of the century.
