The Prodigious Magician
A pagan scholar in third-century Antioch, arguing his way out of a book toward the idea of one god, is stopped in a wood by a courteous stranger who offers to teach him magic on the usual terms. What he wants the magic for is a Christian woman who has already refused two noblemen and will not look at him either. Shelley translated long stretches of it, and the Cyprian legend behind it is one of the streams that fed the Faust story.
