Devotion to the Cross

Calderón de la Barca · c. 1633 CE · Play · Spanish · Renaissance

A foundling raised in a Sienese household, born at the foot of a wayside cross and carrying its shape as a birthmark, is refused the daughter of the house and kills her brother in a duel over her. He takes to the hills with a band of robbers and lets go anyone who invokes the cross. Camus translated it in 1953 for the Angers festival, one of several returns he made to the Spanish Golden Age.
