Paradise Regained

John Milton · 1671 CE · Poem · Judeo-Christian · Enlightenment

Forty days in the desert after the baptism, the Son of God is met by an adversary who offers him food, then wealth and arms, then the kingdoms of the earth and the learning of Athens, and at last sets him on the temple pinnacle. The contest is conducted almost entirely in speech, the tempter pressing for use and occasion, the tempted refusing both. Milton built the brief epic on the model he had named decades earlier in the Book of Job.
