Comus

John Milton · 1634 CE · Play · English · Enlightenment

A young woman separated from her brothers in a night wood falls in with a courteous enchanter who offers her rest, a seat and a cup. Her brothers search for her while an attendant spirit works against the charm, and the debate between captor and captive turns on whether nature's gifts are for hoarding or for use. Written for the Earl of Bridgewater's household and performed at Ludlow Castle in 1634.
