Samson Agonistes

John Milton · 1671 CE · Play · Judeo-Christian · Enlightenment

Blinded and set to grinding at a mill in Gaza, the champion of Israel receives in turn his father, the wife who sold his secret, and a Philistine giant, and each visit forces him to reckon with how the strength was lost. A chorus of countrymen argues over whether the fault lies with the man or with the God who chose him. Milton set the story from the Book of Judges in the form of Greek tragedy and prefaced it with a defence of that choice.
