My Neighbor Totoro

Hayao Miyazaki · 1988 CE · Film · Japanese · Contemporary

Two sisters move with their father into a country house near the sanatorium where their mother is being treated, and find soot spirits in the dark rooms and, under the camphor tree, a large sleeping creature only children see. Days pass in bathing, planting seeds and waiting at a bus stop in the rain. Miyazaki's quiet picture became Studio Ghibli's emblem and the measure for children's storytelling on screen.
