The Jungle Book
Rudyard Kipling · 1894 CE · Short Story · English · Victorian
A man's child crawls into a wolf den in the Seeonee hills and is brought up by the pack under the Law, schooled by a bear and a black panther and hunted by the lame tiger who claims him by right. Other tales here follow a white seal searching for a beach no hunter has found and a mongoose keeping cobras out of an English bungalow at Segowlee. Kipling wrote them in Vermont, and the Law of the Jungle became the most quoted thing he ever invented.
