West Side Story

Jerome Robbins / Robert Wise · 1961 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

Two gangs, one white and one Puerto Rican, fight over a few blocks of Manhattan while a boy sworn to one of them falls for the sister of the other's leader across a gymnasium dance floor. Robbins drilled the choreography onto real streets already condemned for the Lincoln Center clearance. It took ten Academy Awards and proved the screen musical could carry tragedy.
