Ceremony
Tayo comes home to Laguna from a Japanese prison camp shaking with malaria and convinced that he cursed the rain away in the jungle while his cousin died there, and neither the army doctors nor the old ceremony can reach him. A medicine man in Gallup who works with telephone books and calendars sends him after a herd of stolen spotted cattle and a pattern of stars, and the search ends at an abandoned uranium mine where the witchery that made the war is waiting for him. Silko braids Laguna Keres storytelling in verse through the prose, and the novel has become a fixture of the American literature curriculum.
