House Made of Dawn

N. Scott Momaday · 1968 CE · Novel · Native American · Contemporary

Abel comes back to his grandfather's pueblo from the war in 1945 unable to say the words of the ceremonies or to explain himself to anyone, kills an albino man he takes for a witch, and serves his sentence before being relocated to Los Angeles. Beaten half to death on a beach there, he returns to bury Francisco and takes his place in the dawn runners. The first novel by a Native American writer to win the Pulitzer Prize, and the book conventionally treated as the opening of the Native American Renaissance.
