Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

J. K. Rowling · 1997 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

An eleven-year-old kept in the cupboard under the stairs by the aunt and uncle who took him in as a baby is buried in letters he is forbidden to open, until a giant arrives to say his parents were murdered and he is expected at a school for wizards. Sorted into a house and set against a teacher who seems to loathe him, he starts asking what is behind a forbidden door. A dozen publishers turned it down before Bloomsbury took it.
