The Subtle Knife
A boy in Winchester hiding his mother from the men who frighten her kills one of them in her house and runs, and under the hornbeam trees at the edge of a bypass he finds a patch of thin air that opens into a Mediterranean city with no adults left in it. The girl from the other world is already there. In a tower at the city's centre men are fighting over a blade that cuts through the walls between worlds.
