Pierre

Herman Melville · 1852 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

The heir of a Hudson valley estate, engaged and adored, receives a letter from a young woman who says she is his father's daughter, and answers it by giving up his whole inheritance and taking her to the city as his wife. What he intends as absolute virtue reads to everyone around him as ruin or worse, and the book he sits down to write in a cold room will not come. Published a year after Moby-Dick and hated on sight, it finished off what remained of Melville's reputation.
