Death in Venice

Thomas Mann · 1912 CE · Short Story · German · Modernist

A celebrated and rigidly disciplined novelist, stalled in Munich, takes a holiday he had not planned and ends up at a Lido hotel where a Polish family is staying. The boy among them strikes him first as a question of sculpture and then does not stay that way, while the city quietly keeps something from its visitors. Apollonian order giving way to the god Mann had been reading about in Nietzsche and Euripides.
