Bloodchild

Octavia E. Butler · 1984 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Contemporary

On a preserve set aside for the last humans on a distant world, a boy has been promised since birth to T'Gatoi, an official of the insectile species that shelters them and needs warm-blooded hosts for its young. The night he is shown at close quarters what an implantation looks like when it goes wrong, the arrangement he grew up inside stops resembling a kindness. Butler insisted the story was about a pregnant man and a bargain freely struck, and not about slavery.
