Dawn

Octavia E. Butler · 1987 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Lilith Iyapo wakes in a windowless room two hundred and fifty years after the war that emptied the Earth, kept alive by a species of gene traders who salvaged what was left of humanity and expect something in return. She is told to wake the other sleepers and lead them, knowing they will not thank her, and must decide how much of what the Oankali offer she can bear to accept. First of a trilogy that treats the survival of the species as a question about consent.
