The Awakening
A New Orleans wife summering at Grand Isle learns to swim, attaches herself to a young Creole man, and comes back to the city determined to paint, to keep her own hours and to answer to no one. Her husband treats the change as an illness; the women around her divide between a devoted mother of five and a solitary pianist who lives alone. Suppressed by reviewers as morbid and left out of print for fifty years, it was recovered in the 1960s as a founding text of American feminist fiction.
