Perceval, the Story of the Grail

Chrétien de Troyes · c. 1181 CE · Poem · French · Medieval

A boy raised in the forest by a mother who has kept knighthood from him rides to Arthur's court, takes up arms he barely understands, and at a castle by a river fails to ask the one question that would heal a maimed king. Gauvain's parallel adventures interleave with his, and the text breaks off mid-line with its author dead. The Grail enters European literature here; Wolfram, the Vulgate Cycle and Malory all begin from this unfinished work.
