Bleak House
The suit of Jarndyce and Jarndyce has ground through Chancery so long that nobody alive knows what it was about, and the fog of the opening chapter sits over the court as the court sits over the litigants. A young woman raised without being told whose child she is keeps house for one of the parties, while a bored aristocrat's wife startles at the handwriting on a legal document and a police inspector begins tracing where it came from. Half the book is her retrospect and half an anonymous present-tense narration, and the disease carried out of the slum into the great house closes a circuit the law pretends is not there.
