Oliver Twist

Charles Dickens · 1838 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

A boy born in a workhouse asks for more gruel, is sold to an undertaker, and runs away to London, where a boy called the Artful Dodger takes him to an old man who trains children as thieves. A housebreaking job and a young woman's conscience pull him between the gang and the household that shelters him. Written against the new Poor Law, and the book that fixed the Victorian picture of the criminal underworld.
