Our Mutual Friend
A waterman who makes his living pulling bodies out of the Thames brings in one identified as the young heir to a fortune made from London's dust heaps, and the money passes instead to the illiterate old servant who sifted the mounds for its owner. A stranger takes lodgings near the family, a schoolmaster conceives a violent obsession with the waterman's daughter, and a newly minted society dines at the Veneerings' table where everything down to the guests is on approval. Dickens's last completed novel, and the one in which money is refuse outright: the dust heap and the river between them cover its whole economy.
