The Woman Who Walked into Doors

Roddy Doyle · 1996 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A guard calls at the door to tell Paula Spencer, a thirty-nine-year-old Dublin cleaner and drinker, that her husband is dead, and she goes back through the dance hall where she met him, the wedding and seventeen years of beatings to work out where she stopped being believed. Doctors wrote down what she said and treated her as drunk, and her own family found reasons to look elsewhere. Doyle had first written the character for a television serial that set off a national argument about what happens behind Irish front doors.
