Drinking Alone by Moonlight

Li Bai · c. 750 CE · Poem · Chinese · Medieval

A pot of wine among the flowers and nobody to share it, so the drinker lifts his cup to the moon and counts his own shadow to make a party of three. The moon has never learned to drink and the shadow only copies what he does, but the three are told to make the most of the spring while it lasts. First of a set of four, and the piece most often produced as evidence that its author could manufacture company out of solitude.
