Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East?
In a hermitage high in the Korean mountains an old Zen master, feeling his death approach, sets his two charges — a young monk who fled the city and an orphan boy troubled by a bird he has killed — against the koans he will leave them with. Almost nothing happens except light, water, seasons and the weight of the questions. The painter Bae Yong-kyun made it nearly alone across seven years, and its Golden Leopard at Locarno was the first top European festival prize ever taken by a Korean film.
