Pearl

The Gawain Poet · c. 1400 CE · Poem · English · Medieval

A jeweller who lost a pearl in a garden falls asleep on the mound where it slipped from him and wakes in a bright country cut in two by a river, with a young girl in white standing crowned on the far bank, calling him a fool for his grief. She argues him through the parable of the vineyard and the arithmetic of grace while he keeps looking for a way across. Twelve hundred lines in a hundred and one linked stanzas, by the poet of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and preserved in the same single manuscript.
