Four Quartets
Four meditations, each keyed to a place — a Gloucestershire rose garden, a Somerset village, rocks off Cape Ann, a Huntingdonshire chapel — work the same problem of time present and time past from four directions. The wartime sections take in fire-watching in a bombed London street and a dawn meeting with a familiar compound ghost. Eliot thought it his best work; the Little Gidding encounter is written in an English terza rima after Dante, and the Dry Salvages turns aside to what Krishna meant on the field of battle.
