Journey of the Magi

T. S. Eliot · 1927 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

One of the three kings, old now and dictating, recalls the worst time of year for a journey: camels galled and refractory, the towns hostile, the villages dirty and charging high prices. The account keeps circling back to what exactly it was they had travelled to witness, and whether the word for it is birth or death. Written for Faber's Ariel series, its opening lines lifted almost verbatim from Lancelot Andrewes's 1622 Nativity sermon.
