The Cocktail Party

T. S. Eliot · 1949 CE · Play · English · Modernist

A London solicitor gives a cocktail party without his wife, who walked out that morning, and an uninvited guest who drinks gin and water and sings loudly turns out to be a psychiatrist of unusual method. Over three acts the guest sorts the husband, the wife and the mistress toward the lives each is actually fit for, at very different costs. Eliot built it on Euripides' Alcestis, a debt he acknowledged and expected nobody to spot.
