Felling

Gabriela Mistral · 1938 CE · Poem · Latin American · Modernist

Grief for a dead mother opens the book and empties the speaker out; from there the poems turn to the matter of America, cordillera and maize and sun, and then to bread, salt, water and air handled as though newly made and named for the first time. A section of songs and rounds for children is set against the mourning. The poet, by then a consul living out of trunks in Europe, gave the proceeds to Basque and Spanish children displaced by the civil war and said so in the book.
