Sonnets of Death
Three sonnets addressed to a man in his grave: the speaker will take him down out of the cold niche other people put him in, lay him in humble sunlit earth, and afterwards argue with God over which of them had the better claim on him. Behind the poems is the suicide of a young railway clerk the poet had loved and quarrelled with. They won the Juegos Florales in Santiago in 1914 and made a provincial schoolteacher writing under an assumed name known across Chile overnight.
