Birthday Letters

Ted Hughes · 1998 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

Eighty-eight pieces addressed to Sylvia Plath run from a Fulbright photograph seen in a Cambridge shop window through the courtship, Spain, Devon and the horoscopes she kept, held throughout in the second person. Across the thirty-five years since her death Hughes had said almost nothing in public, and he leaves the claims here unargued. Issued months before his own death, it took the Whitbread and the Eliot Prize.
