Lupercal

Ted Hughes · 1960 CE · Poem · English · Contemporary

A hawk sits at the top of a wood with its eyes shut, rehearsing the argument that the sun is behind it and that its manners are tearing off heads. Pike are killers three inches long from the egg, and the pond stocked with them holds one too immense to move, fished at night by a boy whose hair freezes on his head. The second collection, taking its title from the Roman fertility rite it closes on.
